Last month's open house for the Air Explorer Post 3008 resulted in its first two recruitments -- and organizers are looking for more.
The Minter Field Air Museum Board of Directors have sponsored this group and want to expand the post's visibility in the community.
The goal of Post 3008 is to make members aware of the different responsibilities that come with aviation as a career field. Post members will learn the different aspects of building, rebuilding and maintaining aircraft, become familiar with airplane controls, explore flight training opportunities and study airline and airport management. They will also work with an air show.
The opportunities with Air Explorer are endless. By learning the basics prior to going to college, those involved have a step up on the competition.
Air traffic controllers make up the largest segment of retiring people in the aviation industry. It's a high-stress job, but if offers good pay, depending on the location, and the benefits are excellent. Over the next five years, the market for traffic controllers will be strained, with many people retiring and very few people applying.
General Jim Whitehead, who oversees the operation of the program, wants to have a group of youth dedicated to pursuing a career in aviation.
If you have any interest in this program or would like additional information contact Jeff George at the Southern Sierra Council to join (jgeorge@bsamail.org) The all-youth, coed -based career program is available to those between 15 and 20 years of age.
