Sure, they're a little out of the neighborhood, but two new businesses in Bakersfield are certainly worth mentioning. They're owned by Northwest residents with unique ideas- one emulates God's house, and the other's more of an urban chateau.

Partners Kim Kranyak and Lisa Harden opened Urban Chateau Interior Design at 1918 19th Street in September. They completely redid the interior and exterior of the store, which offershome embellishments, gourmet baskets and fine wines.

"We've been doing interior design together for six years," said Harden. "We love it, and we've gotten a great response from the community."

There are two parts to the store. The front building, green on the exterior and a rich goldish-yellow on the interior, was modeled after a wine cellar. Kranyak and Harden sell more than 250 types of wine, gift baskets (they often substitute crystal bowls and silver urns for the basket), accessories and bath products and homemade bath salts from their own line, Vieux Carré.

A spacious patio leads out to the large design showcase in back, which contains a treasure-trove of both recovered antiques and new pieces. Kranyak and Harden shop in Los Angeles and San Francisco and frequent flea markets for finds. "If you're looking for one-of-a-kind pieces, you'll find them here," said Harden.

Linda and Warren Mayhew are opening a new Christian store in the Southwest. Hope Christian Stores is located at 7850 White Lane, Suite 3B, in the Gosford Albertsons Shopping Center. The opening date is set for Dec. 6, and a grand opening is scheduled for Dec. 18. The event will include an appearance by the band Sonic Flood. They will be signing CDs, shirts, pictures and posters.

The store will have designated sections, including a youth area with T-shirts, books, hats and jewelry, a children's area with books, music, shirts and videos and additional books, music, art, jewelry and gift items for all ages.

Customers will also be able to place special orders from catalogues and make special requests. Free wireless Internet access will also be available.

"We have also set up a program that allows us to give back to the churches of this community," said the Mayhews' daughter, Jenn Fischer. "Any church that places our ad in their bulletin will receive 10 percent of all purchases made by the body of that church. A check will be dispersed monthly to each church involved, on a continuing basis, as it is a gift of appreciation from us to you."

Interested churches can contact the store. For more information, call 827-1727.
