Since I've been reading The Northwest Voice, I've often noticed the writings of people who desire a community library in Northwest Bakersfield. Of course, I'm in complete agreement with that concept, since libraries are among my favorite places in the world.

One day, I was doing some metacognitive thinking about the issue and a neat idea came to me: why not develop a Northwest Bakersfield Free Library? We certainly have enough builders and financiers in the area to get the job done!

I have always had an elaborate imagination, so I might as well go for broke on this one. What about a library building patterned after the one in the PBS children's program, "Between the Lions?" It's certainly a charming facility that the whole neighborhood could enjoy and feel proud of.

Additionally, landowners could donate land, builders could donate building materials, carpenters could donate time, scholars, readers and educators could donate books and other media, and so on. Then there is the Gates Foundation, which does a lot of work in providing state-of-the-art computer equipment all over the country. That would certainly be a worthwhile goal.

Of course, this library should not only have books, periodicals, a computer lab, videos, CDs, DVDs, etc., but it should also be outfitted with community rooms, classrooms, a conference room, a children's toy room, a Bakersfield room, a Kern County room and a California room.

Also, there should be a marble "wall of fame" in the entrance way. And beautifully planned gardens in front of and behind the building. A final touch would be a planetarium room equipped with a telescope for moon, star and planet gazing.

Someone once told me, "You might as well think BIG if you're going to think at all!"

If the right people get involved with an idea like this, it can take off like a 747. I personally bank at Bank of America in the Northwest, but I imagine any bank in our community might be interested in playing host to a capital fund account for the Northwest Bakersfield Free Library. If people would like to toss this idea around, they can write to me c/o The Northwest Voice. After all, the Northwest sky is the limit.
