The other day, I was stacking my wife’s magazines to take them for recycling.
I wasn’t really paying attention to the covers, that is, until one word caught my eye — DIET.
I realized I’d seen that word quite a few times, so I stopped and went back through the stack.
I won’t mention the names of the magazines, but they were all geared toward women, and all had that one topic in common.
Here are some of the headlines that I read:
•Dumped For Over-Dieting
• Bye-Bye Belly Fat
• Lose 5 Pounds This Week Without Dieting
• The Supermarket Diet
• One-Day Super Diet
• The Antioxidant In Green Tea That Works Like A Diet Pill, etc.
Has the world gone crazy?
Apparently so, but at least I now know where Debbie gets all the diets she mentions.
I decided to see what some of these magazines offered.
Upon closer inspection, it was apparent that the miracle diets weren’t all dealing with body image.
In one issue, there was a spread for an “on-line” weight-loss coach.
Yet in another, there was a list of recipes titled, “Decadent Diet Dinners.”
There were articles on dressing to look thin and younger as well as “crash-diets” for those special occasions.
I know that our country is obsessed with body image, but this floored me.
That afternoon, I gained a new respect for women — if they can subject themselves to such a barrage of reminders that they just may not be perfect, then my hat’s off to them.
And now, as we get ready to embark on my wife’s latest effort, The Rice Diet, I wonder how it compares to all the others.
Since I really need to lose weight, I guess I’ll go along with it, but I am really tempted to hold out for a pizza diet.
Now, THAT would be tempting!
