Mackenzie Carter of Northwest Bakersfield has won the opportunity to represent Bakersfield and California in the 2005 Pre-Teen America National Competition to be held in Baton Rouge, La., next summer.

The Pre-Teen California Scholarship and Recognition Program was held recently at the Holiday Inn Select. Seventy-five of California's top female students ages 7 to 12 competed for more than $5,000 in educational bonds, prizes and awards.

Participants competed in seven evaluation categories, including academic achievement, volunteer service to church and community, school honors and activities, development of personal skills and abilities, general knowledge, communicative ability and on-stage acknowledgment of accomplishments.

Carter, a first runner-up, will go on to the national competition July 2 to 7 at the Holiday Inn Select Hotel in Baton Rouge, where she and other contestants will compete for more than $25,000 in educational bonds, prizes and awards.

The Pre-Teen America Program was founded in 1990 and conducts programs in 40 states. The national charity affiliate of the Pre-Teen America Program is the Shriners Children's Hospitals.

If you are interested in recommending a potential participant for a future Pre-Teen America State Program, submit the young lady's name, address, age, birthdate and G.P.A. to the Pre-Teen America National Headquarters, P.O. Box 14328, Baton, Rouge, LA 70898 or e-mail info@preteenamerica.com.
