Spencer's Restaurant at 10437 Rosedale Highway is a traditional Sunday morning breakfast spot, with a loyal group of customers from the Northwest and elsewhere.
After church on Sunday, you will have a hard time finding a better breakfast anywhere, but you may have to endure a short wait. Having enjoyed breakfast there many Sunday mornings, I've never had to wait longer than about 20 minutes - - and it's worth it!
Their omelettes are just delicious, and the menu includes pancakes, waffles, eggs cooked every way, sausage, bacon, etc., with items priced from $5.49 to $8.79. Drinks are extra.
I recently enjoyed lunch with family members and had one of the best hamburgers I've had in a long time. The French fries were also outstanding -- very crisp and tasty. I think they must follow a recipe I saw on TV recently where they par-boiled the sliced potatoes and then deep-fried them. They were crunchy on the outside and soft and tasty on the inside.
Spencer's, owned by Gilbert and Michelle Blevins, has been at its Northwest location for about 15 years. Before it became "Spencer's," the restaurant was part of the Perko's chain. The Blevins recently opened a second Spencer's in the Southwest.
"We have a diverse menu, and the service isn't like Denny's. We're homestyle," said Gilbert, who said about 80 percent of customers are regulars whose favorites include chicken fried steak and Swedish pancakes.
"We've been here almost 16 years, so we must be doing something right," said Gilbert, who said he is planning to remodel the restaurant soon in a fashion similar to the Southwest location.
His son, Mitchell, barbecues outside every Friday night so passers-by can stop and pick up dinner on the way home.
The restaurant offers a senior menu and a children's menu. Lunch sandwiches come in a tempting variety and range in price from $6.59 to $8.99. Low-calorie plates are also available and range from $6.99 to $8.50. Dinner items typically cost between $6.59 and $8.99.
