It all began Friday morning Sept. 4, 2008, with the principal of Olive Drive Elementary, Darren Grisham, introducing his own parents and grandparents of his kindergarten son at ODE to lead the flag ceremony for the celebration of GRANDPARENT'S DAY!! And what a morning it was.
Everyone was all smiles and the proud students lead their gloating grandparents to visit their classrooms after the 4th grade students sang “Proud to be an American” written by LeeGreenwood. This was extremely fitting because many of the grandparents were U.S. Veterans.
If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘ Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.
And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
Upon entering the classroom I (Mrs. B) welcomed the grandparents and shared with them our question of the week. I give my students an answer and they come up with a question, the answer for the week “GRANDPARENTS”. Some of the questions were: “Who makes me feel cozy?” “Who gives lots of presents at Christmas” “Who spoils me when I go over to their house?” “Who is old and wise and buys me ice cream?” “Who cares for me when my parents can’t?” “Who NEVER misses one of my football games?” “Who loves me the most?” WOW!! Does this sum up what a grandparent is.
After the Question of the Week, grandparents and grandchildren filled out a Family Tree and then the grandkids interviewed their grandparents. One of the questions was what was the price of gas which was 25¢, a far cry from the almost $4.00 a gallon.
It was so neat to have the grandparents then share some stories. Molly Saba’s grandfather shared a story about being called to Vietnam. His mom was not ready for him to go so she wrote the president, governor, senators, and every big wig in congress. Not long after, he was being called Sir.
Another story told by Danielle Del Papa’s grandfather was about when he was a young boy making up his own fun; of course video games were not around then. He liked to find June Bugs or large beetles and tie a string around their neck. Before you get all upset and think bug abuse, it was not like that at all. Actually, it was great exercise for the bugs. The bugs would take off in flight and viola instant bug kite. The boys in my classroom were captivated and said, “Where can we find June Bugs?”
This day was filled with LOVE, smiles, and pride by students and grandparents alike as they shared in conversation with one another, crossing the generation gap for a short time. I wish every day was Grandparent’s Day!! Don’t forget to HUG or call your grandparents today! HAPPY GRANDPARENT’S DAY!
