Shirley and her husband, Phillip, have lived in the Northwesr for the last four years.  She is a correctional officer at Tehachapi State Prison. They have five children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her hobbies are cooking and learning to sew. This recipe for buenlos was a first-place winner at the Kern County Fair this year.

                             Buenlos

5 cups flour

Dash of salt

Handful of sugar

2 eggs, beaten

*cold water (approximately 1½ to 2 cups) add water gradually to dough

 
Mix flour, sugar and salt in a bowl. Beat eggs and 1½ cups water together. Add to flour mixture. Add more water if needed. Knead on floured board. Make in to very small balls and roll out very thin. Fry in hot oil. Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture.

Note: Fry until light brown for soft buenlos or medium for crispy ones. 

Sprinkle sugar mixture on both sides to your taste.

 
*When rolling out tortillas, dust with flour to avoid sticking. If too much water added dough will be sticky and hard to roll. Add more flour. If not enough water is added dough will be dry and hard to roll.  Add more water.
