Imagine David Beckham showing up at soccer practice to give your team some pointers on free kicks. It's sort of the equivalent of the Lakers coming to do a basketball practice with you.
That's kind of what it will be like when the Dallas Brass comes to Bakersfield on Jan. 12, 2005, to work with Liberty and Garces high school band students, holding a clinic and rehearsal.
The group is scheduled to perform at the Bakersfield Convention Center Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. 200 band students from area high schools will join the Dallas Brass onstage to perform a selection during the concert.
The Dallas Brass, a sextet that has played at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, comes to Bakersfield primarily for a performance for the Bakersfield Community Concert Association. The group added a band clinic and student rehearsal to its itinerary because working with high school band students is part of its mission. Their hope: Inspire kids to stick with music, even if they don't make it a career.
The sextet in Bakersfield will give students an experience they will always remember. Students are allowed to work with professionals in the field and see what the possibilities are for them personally, ie., enjoying music for the rest of their lives or becoming a professional musician.
At the clinic, band members perform a mix of tunes, teach the kids to play a song using their hands as instruments, and encourage them to practice -- then encourage them again. The experience may reaffirm a student's wish to play music professionally one day.
Outreach program elements:
1. Clinic -- Dallas Brass offers tips on becoming better musicians, including discussions on practicing, breathing, and other subjects that apply to all instrumentalists. Includes performance of several selections and opportunity for student questions. Percussionists generally separate for part of clinic to work with Dallas Brass percussionist, Dan Hostetler.
2. Student rehearsal -- Directed and coached by the Dallas Brass. Rehearsal is for the evening concert where students are invited to perform a piece with the Dallas Brass.
3. Evening public concert -- A full Dallas Brass show, from classical to jazz. Students perform concert finale with Dallas Brass.
