Update: According to volunteer Lisa Shelley, the Christian Housing Relief Project, which is working in Northwest Bakersfield to refurbish trailers as future residences for displaced victims of Hurricane Katrina, 10 trailers departed the morning of Oct. 17 for Biloxi. A fellow volunteer said that Bubba, the man from Mississippi who was out in Bakersfield to transport the trailers, said, "These aren't trailers, these are homes." Despite a flat tire and some permit issues, the rest of the trailers will soon follow. For more information call 587-4602.

The North of the River Recreation and Park District received two $1 million state grants designed to help communities build recreational facilities.
The money will partially fund a new community center and 40-acre playing field complex set to break ground in the Northwest in two years. A $1 million Urban Parks and Healthy Communities grant will fund a multipurpose gym in a planned community center in RiverLakes Ranch expected to cost about $14 million. The second $1 million came from a 2002 Resources for Youth Soccer and Recreation Development grant, which will pay for lighted playing fields, bleachers, benches, backstops and other equipment in the planned Polo Community Park.

Retro retailer Happy Trails, which opened in March 2005, closed its doors at its location at the Northwest Promenade a few weeks ago.
