The first “Family Date Night,” co-sponsored by Kaleo Fellowship and American Kids Sports Center drew over two hundred fifty people out on Oct. 13, entertaining grandparents, parents, kids and teens in a whole-family environment.

The entire event, free to everyone, was filled with smiles from the bounce houses, velcro wall and jousting to the Wii tournament, obstacle course and gymnastics activities complete with American Kids instructors.

Kaleo Fellowship is new addition to the community — a new church plant supported by several other local churches. Kaleo will have two preview services in December, including Dec. 2 and a Christmas Eve service, before kicking off a regular service schedule in January. All services will be held at the American Kids Sports Center, and “service” is an important word for Kaleo Fellowship.

"To us, church isn't just a building or a parking lot.  It's not just people sitting in chairs or singing songs.  The church is God at work through his followers," said Pastor Brent Colaw. "So while you may find us gathered in a building celebrating our relationship with God, you're just as likely to find us out in the community demonstrating God's love for all people through random acts of kindness and radical acts of service."

Every fourth Sunday of the month, members of Kaleo, along with anyone who would like to participate, will be in the community serving in a variety of ways. The projects may be small — like mowing lawns or doing home maintenance for those who are unable to do it on their own —  or the projects may be big — like cleaning parks or helping local schools. One thing is certain: Kaleo will enjoy fellowship, they will enjoy worship, and as a form of both, they will be in the community offering help to those who need it.

Kaleo Fellowship wants to be of the community and not simply in the community, very much like American Kids Sports Center, who has graciously opened their doors to Kaleo. If you have taken your kids to any of the classes offered at American Kids, from gymnastics and cheerleading to swimming and martial arts, you know that it is a wonderful facility and a place of learning and encouragement for the kids of Bakersfield, making American Kids an appropriate partner for Kaleo Fellowship.
