Letter to the editor: Sept. 11 remembered

"...Did you stand there in shock at the site of that black smoke rising against that blue sky? Did you shout out in anger in fear for your neighbor or did you just sit down and cry? Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones and pray for the ones who don't know? Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble and sob for the ones left below? Did you burst out in pride for the red white and blue, the heroes who died just doing what they do? Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer and look at yourself to what really matters..."
These lines from Alan Jackson's songs speaks the words our hearts were feeling on Sept. 11.
After the attack, every house had a flag in their front yard, every car showed some sort of patriotism, and every school said the pledge of allegiance. Patriotism faded as the war was fought and six years later you could go down a block and not spot one single flag.
Bakersfield doesn't forget though — every Sept. 11, there is a moment of silence in every class, work office and home.
That day will always be imprinted in the American minds and history. It had such an immensely deep impact on all our lives and none of us will forget the ones who lost their lives. We won't forget about all the broken families, whether from the attack or from the war that followed. We won't forget what changed our lives forever.
