For the third consecutive year, the Kern Senior Collaborative is presenting a Spirituality and Aging forum.  The theme this year is “Successful Living Through a Spiritual Life.”  Spirituality is not defined through one faith but through a person’s own acquaintance with spirituality, whether it is through an organized religious group, meditation, exercise, family activities or other ways to express one’s beliefs and spirituality. As in the past, it will be presented at Hodel’s, 5917 Knudsen Drive.  The date is Friday, September 14.  National Health Services, Inc. will administer blood sugar and cholesterol tests at 8:00 a.m. (Fasting is necessary for these tests.)

Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m.  At 9:00 a.m., Rev. Milt Cole, Senior Minister at Riverlakes Church will talk to the group about “Successful Living Through a Spiritual Life.”  Rev. Cole is well known in the community and the Kern Senior Collaborative is pleased that he accepted the invitation to speak at the Third Annual Spirituality and Aging Forum.

Seniors, their caregivers and families are invited to attend the September 14 forum as well as any other community members who are interested in the wellbeing of seniors in our community.  Workshops will be available from 9:45 until 11:00 a.m.  Workshop topics are:

  • Exercise and Spirituality - Cheryl Geisbrecht and Eileen Knight
  • Healthy Cooking Demonstration (National Health Services)
  • Travel for Fun - Lambourne Travel
  • Spirituality and Intellect Panel - Don Clark and others
  • How to be a Caregiver without Losing your Religion (Elana Wendell, Home Instead)

Cost of this event is $10.00 and includes the breakfast, workshops and program.

A door prize drawing will be held at 11:45 and at noon closing music will be presented by internationally known tenor, William Harness.  He is well known for his four-octave range and sings all genres of music from gospel to opera.

Sponsors of the event are:  Bank of America- Reverse Mortgage Division, Around The Clock Senior Care and National Health Services.  Kern Senior Collaborative officers shown in the photo are (from left to right) Barbara Tongate, Secretary-Treasurer, Anthony Goss, Executive Director, Dottie Johns, Community Liaison.  Also pictured is Amy Smith, Programs and Community Partnerships Officer, Kern Community Foundation.

This forum has been well attended in the past.  The Kern Senior Collaborative and sponsors of the event look forward to seeing past attendees and cordially invite all interested persons to attend this unique event.  Tickets are available at the Kern Senior Collaborative office, P.O. Box 2634, Bakersfield, CA 93303.  Upon receipt of checks, tickets will be mailed to purchasers.  The Kern Senior Collaborative telephone is 835-7625 but e-mail (Kernseniors@aol.com) is the preferred method of contact.  The office is open only part-time.  For vendor, sponsorship, booths and ticket information contact:  Kernseniors@aol.com.
