The letter writer who complained about the staff at a junior high school in the Northwest is insulting of the entire educational team. Generalizing in this manner is unfair.
The schools in our community deserve our support. I believe parents should help with homework, because that shows a belief in teachers and education. The letter writer and her husband have apparently been very supportive in that area.
I also believe parents should model good manners. Writing letters that criticize and insult the entire office staff, administration and teaching staff is not a good example to children. The public forum may not be the best place to solve the problems this family has experienced. And there does come a time when a child must be his own voice. Junior high school is a good time to carefully give a child some of that responsibility. The adult world is only five or six years away for most kids at this age.
Guidance and support from parents is essential. Fighting their child's battles is not always productive. I admire parents who take such a deep interest in their child's education. The letter writer and her husband are obviously supportive of their son as he navigates the educational system. I am sure they will continue to be so as he matures and travels the road to adulthood. But I do hope they let him take his share of the responsibility along the way so that the professionals in our school system can do their job and prepare him for the big, wide world.
