This past week a local radio talk show host stated, "I wish they would stop printing
The Voice and dropping it off in my driveway."
The host went on to compare your community publication to solicitation pieces dropped off by gardeners, cleaning services and realtors. The host continued saying that they tied of picking copies out of the gutter and placing them in the trash.
It was apparent that the host did not understand that stories within
The Northwest Voice are written by the community. But this conversation made me wonder what our reader's response would be to this type of criticism. Do you find value in
The Northwest Voice? What makes this publication special to you?
I encourage you to write us with your response.
I look forward to hearing from you.

That's a pretty easy problem to solve, don't send them any more papers should they ask to be removed from traditional or electronic distribution. You can't please all of the people all of the time - there'll always be some criticism.

Community...that is the key word that relates to publications of The Voice. "The Host" most likely deals only in the "political" part of his community, thus being so blatantly rude about not reading a non political publication. Some people just don't "get it" and will never "get it". I choose to pick my battles on a daily basis and this is one where I would say..."In the grand scheme of life, does his (or her) opinion matter?" Answer: NO!

I agree this a community paper and anyone who loves our community should be proud of a paper written by the community. What a jerk was what came to my mind. But, really just throw it away if you dont want it but dont bash it. I would love to know what radio station so I can delete them!!!!

I absolutely love getting the Northwest Voice. This newspaper has wonderful articles written by the "average joe". I love seeing all the pictures about the current events at our local schools. Keep up the good work!

The Northwest Voice has been a breath of fresh air. Finally, we can hear the positive voice of family, friends, and we can even participate ourselves. There is nothing better than picking up my Northwest Voice and seeing a publication about local people and happenings, AND IT'S FREE. How can you beat that? In fact, my two boys who struggle with reading love to pick up the Northwest voice and read (slowly) about their friends, school, and other interesting articles.
RADIO HOST PERSONALITY, you might want to read a publication and consider the fact that it is positive, family oriented, informative, and just plain enjoyable to read before you hastily throw it away and then talk negatively about something you know nothing about. Please, at least make informed comments on your radio station, because in the Northwest we do have a Voice and the option to turn you off.
Remember Northwest editors, staff, and readers, for that one BAH Humbug individual there are multitudes of delighted READERS AND WRITERS!! Keep up the great work and as my 5th grade students would say “Northwest Voice, YOU ROCK!!

The Northwest Voice, a free publication written largely by your unpaid neighbors, teachers, students, pastors, nurses, retirees, and others, serves as an outlet to encourage community members to express an idea or post a photo, and gives opportunities for thousands of people to keep connected and learn the news in their own neighborhoods. It is delivered twice a month to homes in Northwest Bakersfield, less often than we have to drag our trash bins to the curb. Perhaps some people find the twice-monthly home delivery a nuisance. Has our community gotten so big, and have we lost touch with our slow paced past to such a degree that we can no longer tolerate the hassle of a complimentary community paper left unobtrusively on our driveways? Is it a strain on our local citizens to walk down and throw away (if not read) the paper? Have we become so selfish with our time and steps that we’d rather deprive a community of the joy of seeing their stories and pictures in print just to save ourselves the monumental effort of walking down the driveway twice a month? If so, then our formerly close-knit, kind, unselfish community is becoming more like the self-absorbed, egocentric, insensitive metropolis to the south every day. How sad.
Note: As I sat in Barnes & Noble's cafe finishing off a different story for The Northwest Voice, a woman I hadn't seen in 13 years approached me, wanting to tell me that she lives in Kern City and LOVES getting our sister paper, The Southwest Voice, and can't wait to read the articles. Thank you, Lynn Dee!!!
