A common sight in and around the Northwest in spring and early summer is hobby cars cruising around on weekends. The weather is nice and those radical engines just seem to run cooler and better. The people riding in the vehicles are most comfortable this time of the year, too.

Spring is also the season when car clubs start meeting more frequently and enjoying club cruises, activities and car shows, where car club members sit in the shade talking cars and enjoying fellowship.

There are many car clubs with members living in the Northwest: Mopar International, The Camaro Club, Pontiacs of Bakersfield, Old Friends Car Club (OFCC), Golden Empire Mustangs, Fat Fenders of Bakersfield, PT Cruisers and others. If you are interested in any of these clubs, contact the Bakersfield Car Club Council by going to their Web site at www.bakersfieldccc.com, or log on to www.ezboard.com.

Car clubs have been around since the invention of the automobile and usually involve the entire family of the car owner. Often times you will see all ages actively involved in club functions. Most local car clubs have shed that "bad boy" image portrayed in the movies for a friendly, helpful, community-oriented feel. Car clubs have elected officers, established by-laws and opened bank accounts. Dues are minimal, and it's a savvy investment if you're in the car hobby. Car clubs have their own logos, jackets and shirts. Clubs sometimes even sponsor charity car shows. Mopar International and the OFCC have done so most recently. Isn't that what this hobby is all about -- helping people, having fun and showing off your car? The next local car show will be at Chuy's in Rosedale Saturday, June 4.

Overall, joining a car club is the best way to enjoy your hobby car. Joining a car club can give you access to people who have extra parts, unique tools and know-how. Another convenient way to find out about car clubs is to visit the Sonic on Olive Drive on Friday evenings. You'll see all kinds of cars and owners eager to talk about them.

Pictured is Steve Jensen's 1955 DeSoto Firedome Special Couple (2-door hardtop). Steve said he saved this car from the crusher. Just look at the results of time, perseverance and effort. Steve chose to restore the car to as close to its original glory as possible. The car has great paint, lines and chrome. It even has an original working Wonderbar radio! The car has an early 291 hemi engine with an automatic transmission. Steve attends car shows with his family and has a shop full of awards. This DeSoto is truly one of the cleanest hobby cars in the Northwest. Great job, Steve!

In the next column I will spotlight automotive machine shops and talk to a Northwest area shop owner to get the "nuts and bolts." Until next time, drive safe, have fun, and happy motoring!
