When I saw the contest for Youth Athlete of the Month in The Northwest Voice I knew immediately that I had to nominate my daughter, Mallory Long. When you think of the word "athlete" what immediately comes to mind is a person who not only is exceptionally talented in some type of sport activity, but also has other qualities such as sportsmanship and dedication. That person is my daughter, Mallory Long.
Mallory is not only talented in one type of sport, but many. Throughout her eighth grade year at Rosedale Middle School she has continued to play no less than three sports at one time: volleyball, soccer, tennis and basketball. During the week, Mallory jumps from one practice to another. On Mondays and Wednesdays I will take her to basketball practice, and from there we will go immediately to soccer practice. On Sundays you will find Mallory at Bakersfield Racquet Club playing tennis. Mallory has helped lead both her Rosedale Middle School open basketball team and AYSO soccer teams to third place county finishes. To top it off, Mallory maintains no lower than a 3.5 GPA and is a member of the Community Service Club at Rosedale Middle.
Yes, I am a proud parent. Mallory continues to amaze my husband and me along with others who are around her. A great athlete is not only someone that is exceptional in one sport. They are also kind, considerate and true leaders to others around them -- and that's Mallory!
Nominated by Marylou Long.
