Ladies and gentlemen, it is again that time of year (post-Halloween) when we dig out our winter clothes, including our colorful sweaters and elf hats, and begin our preparations for Christmas.

In addition to spiffing up –– with appropriate decorations –– the inside and outside of our homes, we will spend countless hours shopping. We have a list, and we checked it twice for special gifts we will be seeking to purchase for the special people in our lives.

Some of the holiday preparations have risks. I'm not talking about falling off the ladder while putting up thousands of lights or suffering a burn while preparing the bountiful feast (can't wait). I'm talking about going shopping, and subsequently storing those special and precious gifts we have purchased for our loved ones.

While we go blissfully about doing our shopping, humming a Christmas carol in the process, there are those looking for an opportunity to do their shopping, illegally! Here are just a few thoughts to keep in mind while you, clad in your holiday best, are out and about.

• When you go shopping, park your vehicle in a well-lighted area whenever possible. Cover up any valuables that may already be in your car. I know you'll be anxious to start your shopping, but don't forget to lock your car.

• Shop with a friend/relative if possible. There is some security in numbers, and they may also possibly spot that perfect gift for you!

• As you walk to and from the stores, be aware of your surroundings. Are there any people loitering about? Ladies, if possible conceal your purse. At the very lease, hold it securely, and don’t put your purse on the seat of a cart as you push the cart toward your vehicle –– your purse would be an easy target.

• If you are going to put gifts in your vehicle and do more shopping, put them in the trunk, if you have one, or at least out of sight. Anything left in sight is a temptation and fair game! Also, remember to again lock your vehicle!

• When you have finished your shopping and navigated the holiday traffic, which will tax your holiday spirit, and are safely home, discretely sneak your gifts into the house and conceal them. Don't leave the gifts, or other valuables, in your vehicle overnight, especially if you can't park in the garage.

We hope that these reminders will help to ensure that everyone in the Rosedale area to has a safe and enjoyable holiday.
