Perfect way to avoid all the hoopala! It does get old after two years of following the campaign trail. I really can't understand why they let the campaigning start so early. We sure don't need two or more years of listening to all the misinformation they throw at us. Plus, it seems to me all that money they spend on advertising could do more good if it was donated to schools, hospitals, food stamps or other worthy causes. Two years of listening to all the hype, fibs, exaggerations, and just plain lies, is more than we need by about 18 months.

She offered me tickets also but I had other plans. Bummer!! If you like color you would really like my RETRO READING LAVA LOUNGE. Futon, lava lamps, colorful flowers, butterflys, peace signs, etc included. I guess I'm a hippi at heart! Hee! Hee!

I first met Dana when she subbed for me two years ago. I remember returning to work and finding the class *perfect* - as well as a Halloween goodie bag from her (to me). From that point on, I was able to see Dana work - and she is something to behold! Always positive and friendly to all, the kids and staff were always drawn to her. Now, at the NW Voice, she is as hardworking as always!

Great article and I love the colorful classroom!

Who is Chad Vegas?

I don’t know Chad Vegas, but I have of recent heard a significant amount about him so obviously he’s done something right and ruffled a few feathers. It is about time that someone stands up for something. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. I’m tired of mug wamps that just try to please every one or give shallow promises. I’m not sure from the previous commenter how standing up for what you believe in is considered using a bully pulpit. Last time I checked those that believe in gay marriage are singing its praises. Are they to be silenced? Or are we a nation founded on freedom of speech and opinion? A friend of mine recently went to Disneyland on gay day and several times he had to turn his three little girls' heads because two men or two women were standing in line making out. I don’t advocate anyone standing in line making out, but this is over the line. Also to lakerfan I do believe it will make a better school district the sooner we get God back into the schools. I am not of belittling others for their beliefs but Christianity and freedom of religion was what this country was founded on. Every other religion seems to be able to voice there religious views without prosecution. What is it with Christianity that offends so many? If you don’t like people saying IN GOD WE TRUST, Christmas, and Easter then move!!! Last but not least, I agree with lakerfan that holiday names and mottos don’t make better prepared students, but nor do HIGH STAKES TESTING and “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.” So what is the answer for higher educated individuals? I don’t know and no offense, but maybe we should ask Asian countries what they are doing!!

I'm a old-movie buff, thanks to my dad. We would stay up late and watch classics, which have always been my favorite flicks. Favorites, you ask? Definitely the "Nick and Nora" series (detective husband-and-wife team), as well as most Carole Lombard films. Favorite of ALL time has to be "My Man Godfrey" - check it out for a 1930's romantic comedy.

I love this article. What an intriguing topic. I love old movies, but I rarely watch them. I wonder why? We are living such a fast paced lifestyle, but it would be nice to sit down to an old treasure, such as Casablanca. Gone with the Wind is a favorite in my collection.

Who is Chad Vegas?

I think it is important to understand that there are significant issues to talk about and decide upon at nearly every KHSD board meeting, and Chad is just one of 5 trustees who preside over each. The reason that Chad is famous for these few, fairly insignificant, issues is because those who opposed his and the other trustees ideas have made him famous for it.

Those who might cover the more significant issues, which includes both members of the press and members of the community, choose not to. As a school district employee and administrator in Kern County, I can tell you that it is extremely rare for the local press to come banging down our door asking, "What good things are you doing and how can we show the community what is happening?" Instead, when they come calling, you can count on a search for a scandal, regardless of reality.

If you want to find out what types of things are really going on, don't rely on the press, my friend. Read the Board Minutes on your school district's website and/or go to the board meetings.

Who is Chad Vegas? I guess I'm still not sure. What has he done of substance? Change the names of a holiday? Ban sunday practices for academic clubs? Use his bully pulpit to support prop 8? How has any of this created a better school district?

Where is the meat? If this is the description of Vegas that comes from a conservative, it seems to imply that this is all there is. And frankly, this is not very much. Holiday names and mottos don't create better prepared students. It seems that Chad Vegas cares more about proclaiming to the world that he is a christian fundamentalist than being a humble public servant.

i spent many nights there, bringing friends and refurring people. It was SUCH a hit.
On actual Halloween, they coned off the entire street and had, i promise, like 700 people linned all the way down the street to get in!

It was fantastic to hear the chain saw go off, and 30 bloody screams!
I'll miss it this year! But will DEFINITLY be there!

Ha ha ha! You are hilarious! Never did I think I would be the "soccer mom" or a sports mom of any type, but I recently signed my son up for gymnastics thinking it was a great way to harness some of his monkey play! Parents aren't even allowed in the gymnasium, so I sit near the large windows that provide a full view of all the goings on. I thought his lessons were going to be a great chance to get some more reading done, but I've found myself surreptitiously than blatantly marking his progress through each class. When he's climbing the rope, I find myself chanting "Go go go!" as much under my breath as I can manage. When he's trying a new exercise, I'm encouraging him along with "C'mon, Darlin'— you can do it!" The people around me would consider me crazy if they weren't there to watch their kids as well.
Welcome to the world of youth sports! Let the games begin! Who can get there first and grab the best spot for their chairs and then gab on their cell phone throught the entire game. Or which team's parents can be more obnoxious. Hahaha! Oh well I still love it. Watching my kids play their sport is so much fun.

I know, Tracey. At first, I thought it was coincidence, too, but I soon realized that all the headlights coming at me were purposefully on. We were all hurting again, imagining the horror, still stupefied, yet looking at the world (and our safety) a bit more differently now.

Thank you for posting this and getting me all teary again. :) You are a fabulous writer.

My son wasn't even 5 months old when 9/11 occurred. I held my infant in my arms as I watched the second tower fall, trying to comprehend the destruction, wondering how this horrendous event would play out, how it would eventually affect my son's life.

It's still difficult to grasp how 9/11 is affecting our current society. It certainly has NOT been forgotten.

I agree this is a difficult subject to address with aging parents or other relatives. I've done it. I totally disagree with your last point. You should NOT sit down with friends and relatives and explain everything. It's not their business. A will, a Trust document, a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care will suffice. The details need to be known by two or three trusted family members who also know the name of the Attorney who has been consulted. Older people do not want their personal business shared with family and friends. It's no one else's business.

Thanks for taking the time to read about him, Dana, and for commenting :)

One of the more interesting things he did as a child in the '30s was to make and bottle root beer with his two brothers. Long Beach at the time was a growing city, and they would load their red wagon up with the homemade rootbeer, walk up and down the construction site areas afterschool, and sell the beverages for five cents. They would give part of their profits to their parents, taking the rest to Rainbow Pier on the weekends to ride the ferris wheel, whistle at pretty girls, admire the sailors, and drink banana malts.

Thanks again, Dana. You're such an encourager and I always value your comments and opinion!

OK. I've seen it. Michael Keaton is still the best Batman, but Christian Bale is all right. Heath Ledger was amazing, and after seeing his work in "Dark Knight" I truly realized the talent that has been lost. What a tragedy. I could see how he picked up on Jack Nicholson's Joker and really ran with it - FANTASTIC!

I need to watch "Batman Begins" and immediately follow it up with "Dark Knight." What a great movie to see in the theater!

My mom read through this issue the other night and really enjoyed it! She's quite a dog person, and is now determined (should she ever get another puppy) to visit a shelter first.

It really is a comprehensive issue - and I love the pet photos pages!

I wish I had an orchard of fruit to share with you — that way I might get a jar or two of jam back. Unfortunately, I'm only an apartment dweller. Completely land poor!

Good luck in your hunt for local fruit!
