Schools out for the summer...and the swimming begins!
Tomorrow is the last day of school for our daughters....16 1/2 hours to go, but who's counting? We have a lot scheduled for the summer.....but one thing that I know for sure is that we will be doing alot of swimming. We fortunately have a pool, so we won't have to go to a public pool; however, I want to encourage all of you who do go swimming with your young children to not take one minute for granted and to watch your children AT ALL TIMES! I pray that we will not have a repeat of last years fatalities at Riverwalk. I sincerely pray that people will use common sense in allowing their children to "swim" in this body of water...or even wade in it for that matter. It is NOT a public swimming hole.......no if, ands or buts about it. 2 comments from 2 users

We had pool when I was just a toddler and I learned to swim very early. I remember going to Mommy and Me swim class for toddlers at a community park in San Bernardino. I still have a vivid memory of being shoved under the water and the big olympic lane dividers seeming so far above me. My mom was very diligent at teaching us to be good swimmers and making sure that we wore "floaties" when we were around the pool until we were good at swimming. She was always watching out for us and she took CPR classes so she would be able to help if something did go wrong. We were taught from a very early age to stay away from the pool when there wasn't an adult around and that the water could be very dangerous if we were not careful. My parents even installed an iron fence around the pool so that we could not get to it when they didn't want us to. By the time we moved to Bakersfield, my sisters and I were all very good swimmers. We didn't have a pool anymore so our parents would take us down to Beach Park and we would swim in the *gasp* "deadly Kern River." We never went out of our parents' sight. Like I said my mom new CPR too. Her eagle eyes were always on the lookout for something that would go wrong, even for other children in the area. It was usually just knee deep and not fast at all there at the park. We knew not to flail around or pretend to be drowning and to just be careful in general. So after all that and not losing a single sister in a drowning accident, I would just say that it all comes down to parents teaching their kids and watching out for them. It's a big responsibility, but if you are not willing to undertake it, then don't let your kids swim at Riverwalk or in any body of water for that matter. posted by

i agree, stay out of the riverwalk water area! it was never intended for swimming. rather than putting up fences, castle and cooke is relying on all of our good senses to keep our children safe. besides, i'm not a fan of all the children running around in wet underoos. just doesn't seem appropriate.
