A Piece of History and a Piece of my Heart

One of my favorite icons here in Sunset Beach is the 1 lane pontoon bridge that allows access to the island.  It is 1 of only 5 left in the entire country.  It's sheer nature almost forces you to slow down, relax and enjoy the tranquil sights that make up the beach.

There have been numerous attempts to have this quaint piece of history removed and replaced.  However; each time they were soundly defeated.  Progress being what it is, the forces of change have finally vanquished those of us clinging to a small piece of our history.  A proposed "super-span" bridge has been approved by the town alderman, and upon its completion in 2009, that 1 lane bridge that I love so much will be taken apart and sold as scrap.

I'll be next to that old bridge when it happens.  Like an old friend whose time has come, I'll stay until the end.  I spend my afternoons taking pictures, and remembering.  I am going to miss that old bridge.

Hi... can you post a bigger photo?  I tried to click on it and it is so tiny I can't see it.  Dang... that is such a bummer.  So many relics have seen their last days. We are lucky in Bakersfield because many of our landmarks are saved in Pioneer Village or are restored and reused for other things (the old Fox Theater was renovated and now has the best concerts--the old Padre Hotel is being renovated for, I think, people to purchase the apartments (N.Y. style).

Sorry about your bridge.  I have never seen a pontoon bridge, but I've been on a pontoon boat, so I can imagine what the nature is of the bridge.

We do have some neat architectural heritage here in Bakersfield! Dana, you're right about Pioneer Village — last weekend I noticed new buildings there, including a house recently moved from the Rosedale area. We're also pretty lucky that the Fox Theater was saved by a tenacious few back in 1995 (I was lucky enough to be an usher when it first opened back up). What an amazing theater! Any event there is more special simply because of the venue. Hopefully the Padre Hotel will be completely renovated soon — and rekindle life back into the downtown area!

You've got me thinking about what things in Bakersfield — buildings or otherwise — are prominent in my life or important to me.

Beachraider - I'm glad your bridge is safe!
